Hi AnalystCave!

First, thanks for all your posts about Excel/VBA/Programming in general and thanks for the VBA to VB.NET compiler – Very helpful indeed.
I’m trying to figure out how a program stores my models. The program is called Innovyze ICM which is a piece of Hydraulic Modelling software (bear with me).
When I load a model into ICM it produces a bunch of files. Some of these files are TextFiles:

INFR1.DAT

IWTDB002
#Children,1,()

#Parent,1,431
#UsedBy,1,()
#Uses,1,()
Comment,0,
CreationGUID,1,{9A30632D-53FB-4FB9-AB2C-4C8FA987831B}
Hidden,0,
ID,0,
Model Group,1,1
ModificationGUID,1,{426D0C08-FE0C-4D6A-B279-C3F57708D1BE}
ModifiedBy,1,Infoworks
Name,1,End
RecycledBy,0,
RecycleParent,0,
RecycleParentType,0,
WhenCreated,1,42433.41165509
WhenModified,1,42500.52252315
WhenRecycled,0,

However others appear to be in binary format:

INFR1Blob.DAT

ÿª x•QË
Â@œ³ß²H»ZGAoÒ‹çb‹ôRßïdc][í²%ìÂ$™d’äxà‚
{la°Á wÔxÒcó¿ñ5—oO;r
œ582^“U}¼F¾+Rfxd;hÖAóÊ0!7¡‰_ªüª1ô¶¦Ù)V#²dÁlËx‚©S!JÄ|?ë°L4¬.%[óþ³…9Ìî÷ŠM;.FՎݲÖïÍëÖʝ‡§”‹õ÷,»ÓÈ÷îÚ;¯ƒ5½Õ»ŒÌ^Êg™

I want to be able to, from VBA, read how the model is stored in the network.

Ultimately I need a way of reading this Binary file into Excel so I can analyse which parts of the file change when I change certain parts of the database within the program itself. (I’m choosing Excel for lack of another tool that can do the same – are there some you could recommend?)

So my question is, how would one go about this?

If I can read the binary file into a string of binary 1s and 0s then I could easily find the changes and hopefully over time decipher how to read these files. But I don’t currently know how I would do this.

I hope you have a better understanding here?

Thanks,
~Sancarn
